Zimmer opening

Sometimes things happen at the last minute as CMCI visual culture specialist Dr Richard Howells found out when he was asked to step in and open an art exhibition.

The scheduled speaker (a senior fellow of the Royal College of Art with an MBE) was taken ill, so gallerist and town mayor James Stewart asked Dr Howells to do the honours at the 11th hour –which he did after running home to put on a suit.

The event was the opening of “Manhattan”, an exhibition of hand woven tapestry on the subject of New York by master weavers Caron Penney and Katharine Swailes. Caron’s “Stop” was exhibited at the Royal Academy last summer and is one of the pieces now on show at the Zimmer Stewart Gallery in Arundel, West Sussex, until June 27th.
