Our Reader in Culture, Media and Creative Industries Dr Richard Howells appeared live on Sky Television News to debate the “fracas” concerning BBC Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson.
The controversial presenter had been suspended by the BBC. Howells argued that Clarkson made his living by transgression -the anticipation of which held the attention of global audiences. He said that as with other transgressing stars, Clarkson’s career would not in the long term suffer as he was effectively paid to misbehave.
The future of Top Gear itself was less secure said Howells. The format was already getting tired and Top Gear without Clarkson would be like “Hamlet without the prince.”
