Dr Ruth Adams appeared on Sky News on Sunday 20 April 2014, to debate the issue of local authority art collections, and what should be done with them. A Sky News investigation had found that millions of pounds worth of art were lying unseen in council vaults, and there have been calls to sell these off to meet budget shortfalls. Neither Ruth nor her fellow discussant, Nancy Durrant, arts commissioning editor of The Times newspaper, thought that these treasures should be disposed of for short term financial gain, certainly not before all other avenues had been explored. Ruth argued that local authorities could make better use of their collections by regularly changing displays and making them available for research and educational purposes.
